The term “Bikepacking” –which is similar to backpacking– has been around since 1973, when National Geographic published the article, “Bikepacking Across Alaska and Canada.” The article followed Dan and Lys Burden and Greg and June Siple as they traversed from Anchorage, Alaska to Missoula, Montana. Their amazing journey is what inspired us to to make our first bikepacking trip. We loaded up our bikes with all the gear we thought we'd need and set out on a weekend trip. While it wasn't quite as auspicious as Dan, Lys, Greg and June's trip, we learned one valuable lesson: we packed way too much stuff, but man it felt amazing to pedal our way into the unknown.
Just like these bikepacking pioneers, we had no idea of where to start aside from just strapping gear to a bike and going. Which is why we started researching, and you know what we found? Very little. Which is why we created Feral Rides. We understood that starting a new hobby or dare we say, lifestyle can be intimidating, especially when there is limited information. On top of this, we wanted a place that gives you the best information on bikepacking to educate and inspire your two-wheeled adventures.
